Mukono Municipality – A member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Omoding Herbert (OMO), has petitioned the party leadership over what he terms as unfair and undemocratic election procedures recently carried out during internal party elections.
In a letter dated 27th May 2025 and addressed to the Secretary General of NRM through the Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, with a copy to the NRM Party President, Omoding expresses deep concern about the party's use of the lining-up voting method. He argues that the method has undermined the principles of secrecy, fairness, and democracy, leading to the exclusion of able and competent leaders.
"The practice of lining-up has only worked in favor of those with a lot of money, such as top government officials who have the means to bribe voters and use power influence to get positions they are not fit for," Omoding wrote. He further stated that the method has forced out vulnerable groups such as the youth and women from NRM leadership structures, which could be disastrous for the future of the party.
According to the petition, the current voting system unfairly favors individuals seeking personal gain over party development. Omoding claims that such practices have eroded fair competition and allowed the wealthy and powerful to dominate the system at the expense of true grassroots leadership.
As a solution, Omoding has proposed two key actions:
1. Repeat Elections : He calls for the repetition of elections where top officials were directly involved, to ensure a fair and competitive environment for all candidates.
2. Investigate Bribery Allegations : He urges that elections with credible allegations of voter bribery be annulled and conducted afresh under fair conditions.
“It is essential for the integrity of our party that all members can participate freely and equally in the electoral process,” he emphasized, adding that implementing his proposals would restore trust in the party’s leadership and encourage wider participation, especially from women and youth.
Omoding concluded his letter by urging the party leadership to treat his petition with the urgent consideration it deserves.
