SOROTI - In an extraordinary blend of festivity and environmental action, Soroti City's renowned NRM mobilizer, Shaban Ali, celebrated his birthday on Friday with an impactful message. The event kicked off not with cake but with a commitment to a greener future, as Shaban Ali returned to his roots at Rock View Primary School in Moruapesur Ward, Soroti City East. Joined by other notable leaders, he planted trees, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations while underscoring the urgency of climate action.
Tree planting has become a popular yet essential response to climate change, and by involving the community in this symbolic gesture, Shaban Ali used his celebration to raise awareness of how essential trees are in protecting our environment. "This is more than a memory; it’s a statement to the young people that trees are lifelines," Ali shared, emphasizing the critical role trees play in fighting against climate extremes and air pollution. Involving schools in tree planting is especially valuable, as it teaches the youth about environmental stewardship from a young age, fostering a sense of responsibility for the planet.
The birthday bash continued at Rhino Camp Hotel in Soroti City, where influential NRM elites and dignitaries from nearby districts gathered to honor Ali. Amid the festivities, guests shared messages that inspired and uplifted the crowd.
Latif Abudallah, Soroti East’s mayoral hopeful for 2026, delivered an especially heartfelt speech to the youth. “You have a long journey ahead,” he urged. “Guard your lives jealously, make wise choices, and be role models for others.”
Adding to the celebratory spirit, Teso’s iconic singer Josh Rash took the stage, praising Shaban Ali for his support, which played a major role in the success of Josh’s concert at Hyde Park earlier in the year. Josh’s words were not only a nod to Ali but a rallying cry to his fans, reminding them of the power of unity and pride in Teso. “Everything I do, I do for Teso,” Josh declared, sparking cheers from the audience.
The celebration also addressed serious issues, with Soroti District LC5 aspirant Ejoku Stephen urging the youth to distance themselves from negative influences. In his speech, he spoke against the rising tide of criminal activity in Soroti, particularly by the notorious Owok-Owok gang that has plagued the area. Ejoku’s message was clear: the youth are pillars of society, and choosing a path of responsibility over crime is essential to building a peaceful and progressive Soroti.
As he expressed his gratitude for the turnout, Shaban reiterated his desire to inspire the youth. "By planting trees today, I hope to show you that small acts can lead to significant changes," he shared. His words served as a reminder that anyone can be a change-maker.
As the celebrations wound down, the impact of Shaban Ali’s birthday bash left guests not only entertained but also inspired to play an active role in shaping a brighter, greener future for Soroti City.
