Hope has been restored to a 14-year-old boy, Opio Robert, from Kichinjanji suburbs after Kumi Orthopedic Center offered him free surgery for a severe leg condition that had left him in pain for years.
Robert reportedly sustained an injury to his right leg while still very young. Due to limited access to proper medical care, the condition gradually worsened over time, leading to severe complications that caused the leg to rot. The painful situation left the teenager struggling with movement and daily life, while his family faced growing emotional and financial hardship.
The boy’s condition was discovered by Friends at Heart, a charity organization headed by Chief Executive Officer Isabire Francis, during one of its community outreach and charity activities. Shocked by the seriousness of the case, the organization immediately stepped in to seek urgent medical intervention.
According to Friends at Heart officials, several inquiries were made at different health facilities to identify hospitals capable of handling the complicated condition. The estimated medical costs ranged between UGX 3 million and UGX 5 million, an amount that was beyond the reach of Robert’s family.
Robert’s mother, a single parent, had reportedly exhausted all available options in an attempt to secure treatment for her son. The financial burden made it nearly impossible for the family to access specialized surgery.
Relief came when Dr. Okure John, a Ugandan surgeon at Kumi Orthopedic Center, accepted to carry out the operation free of charge. The gesture has been widely praised by community members and charity workers as an act of compassion and humanity.
Friends at Heart commended the medical team at Kumi Orthopedic Center for giving the young boy a renewed chance at life and called upon more well-wishers and medical professionals to continue supporting vulnerable children in need of urgent healthcare services.
